HDB units offer excellent value for families with practical layouts and nearby amenities like schools, clinics, and childcare. The strong community environment provides social support networks. Playgrounds and void decks offer safe spaces for children. However, consider space constraints in newer flats and noise from neighbors due to closer proximity than landed houses.
Ask about work schedules, sleep schedules, social habits, cleanliness, and how issues are handled. If one of you is very neat and the other more casual, it could cause friction. Observe fridge organization, sink state, and bathroom tidiness during viewing. Look for someone whose daily routine and approach to shared living align well with yours. Trust your instincts – feeling comfortable with their personality is a good sign.
Not all HDB blocks have lifts on every floor. In some older blocks, the lift may stop only on certain levels, meaning you’d need to take the stairs for a floor or two. Check if the flat’s floor has direct lift access for convenience, especially if you have lots to carry or anyone with mobility issues. (Newer blocks usually have lifts on every floor.)
Look for stains on ceilings, peeling paint, and musty smells after rain. Outside, inspect gutters, downpipes, and ground drains for blockages. Ask about recent roof repairs and how quickly water pooling or leaks are handled when reported.
A lot of 1-bedroom units have small bedrooms. A queen-size bed usually fits, but a king-size might be a tight squeeze. With a king, you might have little room left for bedside tables or a dresser. Always check the room dimensions beforehand to ensure you can still move around comfortably.
Establish clear common area rules and assign personal storage spaces in each bedroom. Use the third bedroom strategically - as a study, guest room, or helper's quarters. Create a household schedule for shared spaces like bathrooms and kitchen. Consider installing additional hooks and organizers in common areas to prevent clutter.
Condo deliveries are usually held by security when you’re out. Couriers drop packages at the guardhouse or concierge instead of outside your door. You’ll be notified when something arrives so you can collect it. This keeps parcels secure, but you will need to pick them up from the guard post.
