Check walls and ceilings for water stains or mold. Note any problems and have the landlord address them before move-in. More space means more maintenance responsibilities. Budget extra time and money for cleaning, air-con servicing for multiple units, and potential repairs across more rooms. Consider hiring help for regular cleaning or establish clear maintenance schedules if sharing. More space also means higher wear and tear on common areas.
HDB flats open onto a common corridor. If your unit is along a corridor with neighbors walking by, you might need to keep your gates or curtains closed at times for privacy. Corner or end units offer a bit more seclusion since fewer people pass your door. When viewing a flat, notice the corridor layout – if the windows or door face a busy walkway, plan on using curtains/blinds for privacy. It’s a different feel from a private condo, but most residents get used to it.
Condo deliveries are usually held by security when you’re out. Couriers drop packages at the guardhouse or concierge instead of outside your door. You’ll be notified when something arrives so you can collect it. This keeps parcels secure, but you will need to pick them up from the guard post.
Common rooms near front doors or main corridors may have security considerations. Ensure your room has a good lock and consider a door chain. Keep valuables secured and curtains closed for privacy. Check if the main door has proper security features. Some tenants install small safes or use lockable storage boxes for important documents and valuables.
Decide what’s communal and what’s personal, then stick to it. If you borrow, return items clean and promptly. Replace consumables you finish. A quick message before taking anything avoids misunderstandings and keeps goodwill in the household.
