Many are, but not all. Confirm air‑con in your room, servicing schedule, usage rules, and who pays for maintenance. Older compressors may be less efficient and noisier.
1-bedroom units offer better entertaining space than studios with separate living areas. However, overnight guests may need to use a sofa bed in the living room. Consider the bathroom situation - ensure guests don't need to go through your bedroom to access facilities. The kitchen size may limit your ability to cook for larger groups.
Condos have security and access controls. You’ll get a resident card or fob for gates and lifts. Visitors usually need to sign in at the guardhouse, and you might have to approve them. Know your condo’s guest procedure so friends can visit smoothly.
Not all HDB blocks have lifts on every floor. In some older blocks, the lift may stop only on certain levels, meaning you’d need to take the stairs for a floor or two. Check if the flat’s floor has direct lift access for convenience, especially if you have lots to carry or anyone with mobility issues. (Newer blocks usually have lifts on every floor.)
Discuss overnight stays, notice needed, and how often guests visit. Align on using shared spaces when visitors are around, noise after hours, and shared bathroom etiquette. Written guidelines avoid misunderstandings and help everyone host without tension.
For multiple generations, prioritize accessibility and privacy. Make sure one bedroom for grandparents is easy to reach (no stairs) and near a bathroom. A 4-bedroom with a second en-suite (junior master) is ideal to give older parents their own space. Ensure there's plenty of common area for family gatherings, but also enough rooms or corners for privacy when needed. That way, everyone has a comfortable room and nobody feels cramped.
Clarify which accounts must be in your name and how meter readings are recorded at handover. Photograph readings and sockets you’ll use heavily. Schedule installation visits early so internet and power changes don’t disrupt your first week routines.
